Irresponsible Subtenants Left Studio Apartment in Terrible Condition – Huge Bill for Salvation Army
Two irresponsible subtenants caused nearly €45,000 in damages to a rental apartment in Turku, leaving it uninhabitable.
In Turku, two subtenants have caused extensive damage to a rental apartment, leading to costs amounting to nearly €45,000 for the Salvation Army. The apartment was rendered uninhabitable due to the negligence of the tenants, who carried out unauthorized and poorly executed renovations, such as installing laminate flooring over an existing parquet floor and neglecting the cleanliness of the property; walls and ceilings were reported to be in a deplorable state.
The damage was so severe that it not only affected the apartment itself but also resulted in water damage in neighboring units due to the subtenants' failure to manage appliances properly. The kitchen cabinets were destroyed, and the freezer door was detached, causing continuous melting and leakage that contributed to humidity issues. The vandalism extended to the external door and bathroom tiles, and other serious damages, such as a cracked sink and detached heating elements, were noted as well.
The troubling incidents began in January 2020 when a man from Turku rented the apartment. The subsequent destruction raises significant questions about tenant responsibilities and the processes for managing subleases in the rental market. Consequently, the Salvation Army is required to absorb the substantial financial costs associated with repairing the damage, which underscores the impact of irresponsible tenancy on housing organizations and communities.
