Two leaders of a gang selling drugs along the Matanza River were arrested: they were being investigated for two femicides
Two leaders of a drug trafficking gang were arrested during a police operation linked to the femicides of two women in Argentina.
Authorities in Argentina executed a major police operation along the Don Mario stream and Matanza River, resulting in the arrest of six individuals for drug trafficking. This operation was anchored in an investigation into the murders of two women, Vanesa Alejandra Lachmañuk, 28, and Aylén Alejandra Benítez, 14, whose disappearances were reported on September 1, 2024, after they vanished on August 28. The investigation revealed that both women had connections to a drug trafficking organization operating in the Gregorio de Laferrere area, near the Matanza River. Their bodies were discovered two weeks after their disappearance, showing signs of execution-style killings. The police linked the crimes to a local drug lord, Hugo Steven Palacios Brítez, known as 'Panucha', who was identified as the chief suspect through witness testimony. The arrests not only mark a significant step in addressing drug-related violence in the region but also highlight the intricate connection between drug trafficking and femicide in Argentina. The incident reflects broader issues of systemic violence against women and the dangers they face in connection with organized crime, raising urgent questions about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in tackling these intertwined issues.
