With armed agents, elite troops of the Municipal Guard begin operations in Rio this Sunday (15)

The Municipal Guard of Rio de Janeiro is launching an elite division with armed agents aimed at patrolling high-crime areas in the city starting this Sunday.

The city government of Rio de Janeiro is initiating a program in which armed agents from the Municipal Guard will patrol key areas starting on Sunday, October 15. This new elite division, known as Força Municipal, is being deployed to increase security in regions with a high incidence of theft and robbery. The agents will be equipped with Glock pistols, less-lethal munitions such as pepper spray, tear gas, and tasers, and the use of body cameras will be mandatory during operations.

The program's launch is focused on two critical areas: around the Gentileza Terminal and the Novo Rio bus station in downtown Rio, as well as the Jardim de Alah area, which borders Ipanema and Leblon in the southern zone. These locations were chosen based on crime data that indicated a high frequency of patrimonial crimes, particularly during peak hours. The municipal administration aims to respond effectively to public safety concerns and reassure residents and visitors in these bustling locales.

In addition to the initial deployment, the plan includes a gradual expansion to an additional 20 areas throughout the city. This strategic move is a part of the broader effort by local authorities to enhance public safety measures amidst rising crime concerns, showcasing the city's commitment to improving security through a more assertive and visible police presence in urban hotspots.
