Rio details the functioning of the Elite Division of the Municipal Guard
The Municipal Guard's Elite Division in Rio de Janeiro is set to begin operations with a focus on reducing crime in high-incidence areas starting Sunday, supported by extensive training for its officers.
The Municipal Guard of Rio de Janeiro is introducing its Elite Division, aimed at tackling crime more effectively. This unit will begin patrolling the streets from Sunday, October 15th, following detailed planning to map and identify the areas most affected by thefts and robberies. Breno Carnevale, the director of the Municipal Force, emphasized that the initiative targets specific times when such crimes are at their peak, aiming for a significant reduction in these offenses.
The unit comprises 600 trained agents who have undertaken over 500 hours of rigorous training in handling approaches, self-defense, and marksmanship, among other essential skills. The training was conducted under the oversight of the National Public Security Secretariat and the Federal Highway Police, ensuring that the unit is well-prepared for the challenges it will face in the field. This initiative reflects a larger strategy to enhance public safety in Rio de Janeiro, a city that has faced persistent issues related to crime.
The launch of the Elite Division may signal a shift in how local authorities are addressing crime in urban areas, with a proactive approach that incorporates strategic mapping and specialized training. As the division begins its operations, it will be closely monitored to gauge its effectiveness in reducing crime rates and enhancing public confidence in local law enforcement. This initiative could serve as a model for similar strategies in other cities grappling with similar crime challenges.
