Right-wing TVN as a competitor to TV Republic? 'They will abandon it'
Professor Tadeusz Kowalski discusses how the acquisition of TVN by Paramount Skydance could affect its viewership and competition with TV Republic.
As Paramount Skydance approaches the completion of its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by the end of September, questions arise about the future of the TVN station in Poland. Professor Tadeusz Kowalski, a member of the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT), provided insights on how this ownership change might impact TVN's profitability, suggesting that the station is currently lucrative and that its status is unlikely to change significantly post-acquisition. Kowalski noted the importance of retaining current viewers and attracting new ones to ensure the acquisition makes economic sense.
The discussion also highlighted the demographic of TVN24's viewers, primarily consisting of individuals over sixty, residing in larger cities, and possessing higher education and income levels. Kowalski expressed concerns about whether this primarily affluent audience would accept a potential shift towards a right-wing perspective under new ownership. His assertion implies that if viewers find the new direction unacceptable, they might seek alternatives, raising questions about TVN's ability to maintain its audience amidst such changes.
Moreover, Kowalski pointed out that Paramount and Paramount Skydance are currently operating at a loss, which further complicates the scenario. The future competition between TVN and TV Republic will significantly hinge on how effectively the new management can navigate viewership retention and potentially rebrand the station without alienating its established audience. The implications of this transition could reshape the media landscape in Poland, particularly in terms of broadcasting diversity and audience engagement.
