Flights Disrupted in Vilnius - Authorities Detain Drone Owner
Flights at Vilnius Airport were temporarily halted due to the unauthorized operation of a drone in a no-fly zone, leading to the detention of its owner.
The National Crisis Management Center (NKVC) reported that air traffic at Vilnius Airport was disrupted on Saturday for about 23 minutes because of an amateur drone flight in a restricted area. The incident was communicated to the crisis management authorities by the Air Navigation service, highlighting an ongoing concern regarding drone flights near critical infrastructure such as airports.
Police and Public Security Forces responded promptly to the reports and detained the amateur drone operator, identified as a real estate broker filming a property. Authorities stressed that such detentions of drone operators unfamiliar with flight regulations have become increasingly common, signaling a growing need for public awareness regarding drone operations, especially near airports and other significant sites.
Officials issued a strong reminder to all drone operators, including real estate agents and wedding photographers, to familiarize themselves with the regulations before attempting to launch drones. Failing to comply can lead to encounters with law enforcement, potential questioning, and fines, emphasizing the importance of responsible drone behavior to avoid disruptions to air traffic.
