Scientists invite Estonians to observe the arrival of migratory birds
The Estonian Ornithological Society is encouraging locals to report sightings of incoming migratory birds to collect data on spring migration.
The Estonian Ornithological Society has launched an initiative encouraging citizens to record and report sightings of migratory birds arriving in Estonia. This initiative aims to gather valuable data on the patterns and volume of spring migration, allowing ornithologists to analyze changes in avian behaviors over the years. The society has specified that observers should report their findings by the end of May and include details like the date, time, exact location, species observed, number of individuals, and their behavior. It is emphasized that observers should be sure of the species they identify to ensure accurate data collection.
Data collected by the public will be inputted into the PlutoF GO application or the desktop version, where it will eventually be available on the public biodiversity portal, elurikkus.ee. The coordinator of the ornithological observations, Tarvo Valkeri, expressed that this yearโs spring migration is particularly exciting due to a notable cold winter, where persistent freezing temperatures have been observed for the first time in 25 years. Valkeri noted that following this cold snap, the arrival of the first migratory birds such as lapwings and fieldfares is anticipated with the warming temperatures expected later this week.
This project not only helps in monitoring bird populations but also engages the local community in scientific efforts. Such initiatives can lead to increased awareness about biodiversity and the importance of migratory birds in the ecosystem. As spring unfolds, the active participation of citizens in this observation initiative could provide significant insights into the timing and health of migratory species in Estonia, aiding future conservation efforts.
