North Korea launches 600mm rocket artillery as a show of force against the ROK-US joint exercises
North Korea has fired over ten ballistic missiles into the East Sea, likely as a demonstration of military strength in response to the ongoing ROK-US joint exercises, known as ‘Freedom Shield’.
On April 14, North Korea launched more than ten ballistic missiles into the East Sea, marking an unusual display of military capability coinciding with the ongoing joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, dubbed 'Freedom Shield', which began on April 9 and run until April 19. According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were identified as having been fired from the vicinity of Sunan near Pyongyang and were tracked to have flown approximately 350 kilometers. This marks the third missile launch by North Korea this year and the first since January 27.
The South Korean military confirmed that the United States and Japan were closely monitoring the situation, exchanging intelligence about the missile launches. They also stated that the South Korean forces are maintaining a robust readiness posture to respond decisively to any provocations from North Korea. Notably, the Japanese Defense Ministry reported that the missiles flew to an altitude of about 80 kilometers before landing outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), indicating that this was a calculated show of force likely related to North Korea's advancing missile technology.
Analysts are particularly focused on the possibility that North Korea may have launched its 600mm super-large multiple rocket launcher, which can reach a range of approximately 400 kilometers, thereby threatening all of South Korea. The potential for tactical nuclear warheads being mounted on such systems heightens the circumstances surrounding these launches. Recently, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had stated that the use of this weapon would lead to the immediate collapse of the military infrastructure and command systems of opposing countries, reflecting the regime's resolve to demonstrate its military advancements amidst heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
