North Korea launches missiles into the sea while the US and South Korea were conducting military exercises
North Korea fired over 10 ballistic missiles into the sea amid ongoing military drills by the US and South Korea.
On Saturday, North Korea launched over ten ballistic missiles into the sea, coinciding with military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea. South Korean military sources reported the missile launches, indicating a defiant response from North Korea amidst heightened military activity in the region. Meanwhile, Japan's coast guard noted the detection of a missile that reportedly fell into the sea, although it was confirmed to have landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The missiles were fired from an area close to Pyongyang towards the eastern coast of North Korea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the missiles reached an altitude of 80 kilometers and traveled approximately 340 kilometers before landing in the sea. This missile test highlights North Korea's ongoing efforts to expand and enhance its ballistic missile capabilities, which have been a focus for over two decades as they aim to develop the means to launch nuclear weapons.
The persistence of North Korea's missile tests has drawn widespread international condemnation, resulting in numerous sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. This latest display of military prowess is expected to exacerbate already heightened tensions in the region, as the joint military drills by the US and South Korea are often viewed by North Korea as provocative and a direct threat to its sovereignty.
