Liisa-Maria Lusti crowned NCAA indoor champion with a new personal record
Estonian heptathlete Liisa-Maria Lusti achieved a new personal best and won gold at the NCAA indoor championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Liisa-Maria Lusti, representing the University of Oregon, made headlines at the NCAA indoor championships held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, by setting a new personal record in the pentathlon with a total score of 4,498 points, earning her a gold medal in the process. Lusti's remarkable performance included a sprint of 8.49 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, a high jump of 1.81 meters, a shot put throw of 11.40 meters, a long jump of 6.63 meters, and a time of 2:20.38 in the 800 meters, allowing her to outperform her closest competitor, JaiCieonna Gero-Holt from Illinois, by a margin of 32 points. The victory was particularly noteworthy as Lusti's performance in the long jump earned her an individual event win, which ultimately secured her the overall championship. Gero-Holt, who had led prior events with two victories, was limited to a jump of just 5.94 meters, falling short of maintaining her lead. Nonetheless, Lusti managed to surpass her previous personal best in the long jump by 17 centimeters, placing her sixth in the all-time rankings of Estonia in that event, tied with Virge Naeris, while being only four centimeters shy of the second-best record held by Sirkka-Liisa Kivis. This accomplishment not only highlights Lusti's exceptional skills and determination but also reinforces her status in the history of Estonian athletics as she maintains her position as third in the all-time rankings of the heptathlon. With the national record set at 4,593 points, Lusti's performance could indicate great potential for future competitions as she aims towards new heights in her athletic career.
