Blow to 'huachicol' in Veracruz: Two suspected members of a network that stole oil from Pemex arrested

Two individuals suspected of being part of a network stealing crude oil from Pemex in Veracruz have been arrested by Mexican authorities.

The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) announced the detention of two individuals allegedly linked to a network responsible for stealing crude oil from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in Veracruz. This operation reportedly operated under the guise of cargo transport contracting companies, complicating detection efforts by authorities. The investigations led by federal agents involved several inquiries into a group suspected of illegally tapping into Pemex’s oil wells.

As part of this extensive investigation, multiple searches were conducted in October 2025 across various properties located in Minatitlán and Coatzacoalcos. These operations resulted in the seizure of thousands of liters of crude oil, jet fuel, diesel, and other hydrocarbons, as well as major transport vehicles such as trucks and semi-trailers, which were believed to be utilized in the commission of the crime. This indicates a well-organized network that poses significant challenges to law enforcement efforts in combating fuel theft.

The prevalence of fuel theft, known as 'huachicol' in Mexico, has been a pressing issue, prompting various governmental measures to curb this illegal activity. The ongoing efforts by the federal government highlight the seriousness of the situation in Veracruz and the potential implications for national security, revenue for Pemex, and the local economy. The arrests signify an important step in the fight against organized crime in the energy sector, though it remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in the long term.
