Humanitarian Situation Deteriorates in Lebanon, UN Requests Emergency Assistance for Over 820,000 Displaced

The UN has requested $303 million in emergency assistance as the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon worsens amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, leaving over 820,000 people displaced.

The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon has sharply deteriorated due to ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, prompting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to issue an emergency appeal for $303 million. As of August 13, official reports from Lebanon's Ministry of Health indicate that 773 people have died, including 103 children, while 1,933 have been injured since the outbreak of violence. The conflict has resulted in a significant increase in the number of internally displaced persons, with the UN reporting over 822,000 refugees, including 300,000 children, as hospitals in the south of Lebanon are forced to close due to the escalating situation.

Efforts are underway on the ground to distribute food, water, and fuel necessary for maintaining water services, but the scale of need remains grim. The UN anticipates that the number of people directly affected could reach 1.3 million, emphasizing that the funding request aims to support one million people over the next three months. As Guterres visits Lebanon, he highlights the dire circumstances faced by families caught in the conflict and calls for an immediate ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel to prevent further suffering and displacement.

As the Israeli military continues its operations, reportedly launching over 1,100 attacks in Lebanon, the ongoing violence complicates humanitarian responses. The situation underscores the urgent need for international support and a political resolution to restore stability and provide assistance to those in desperate need within Lebanon.
