Police seize 7,500 packs of cigarettes without an invoice at distributor in the coast of SP
Santos Civil Police seized about 7,500 packs of cigarettes allegedly smuggled from Paraguay at a distributor in Praia Grande, São Paulo.
The Santos Civil Police conducted a significant operation in Praia Grande, São Paulo, where they seized approximately 7,500 packs of cigarettes that lacked proper invoices, indicating they may have been smuggled. The operation stemmed from an anonymous tip received by the 1st General Investigations Department (DIG) of Santos, prompting officers to visit the distributor located in the Quietude neighborhood, where two employees were found attending a customer at the time.
Upon arrival, police conducted a thorough inspection of the premises, during which they discovered the illegal cigarettes from nine different brands. The absence of invoices raised suspicions that these products were intended for sale in the regional market, potentially supplying businesses in the Baixada Santista area with contraband goods. While the investigation continues, no arrests were made during the operation, although the two employees were escorted to the police station for further questioning.
This incident highlights ongoing issues with cigarette smuggling in Brazil, particularly from neighboring Paraguay, where tax-free pricing makes contraband attractive in Brazilian markets. Law enforcement is increasingly focused on combating such illegal activities, as they impact local businesses and undermine tax revenues. It is a reminder of the challenges authorities face in regulating tobacco sales and ensuring both compliance and safety in commerce.
