VIDEO: Due to thaw in Ludza Municipality, roads become impassable

A rapid spring thaw has made gravel roads in Ludza Municipality impassable, prompting complaints from residents about the government's response to the situation.

The recent spring thaw in Ludza Municipality, Latvia has caused significant issues with gravel roads, which are now becoming impassable due to melting ice. Residents have expressed frustration, stating that the authorities, including the municipality and 'Latvijas Valsts ceļi', have not adequately assessed and addressed the worsening road conditions in a timely manner. As the number of restricted transport routes increases, locals are feeling the impact of the situation.

One resident, Nikolajs, from the village of Horoševa, highlighted the challenges faced in navigating local roads. For the past week, the access road to his home has been rendered untravelable because of mud, forcing him to traverse it in rubber boots. He noted that without help from his daughter for essential supplies, his situation would be significantly more difficult, illustrating the serious implications of the road conditions for residents' daily lives.

Recent reports from 'Latvijas valsts ceļi' indicate that transport restrictions have been imposed on 626 stretches of gravel roads across the country, with limitations set at ten tons. The most affected areas are in Vidzeme, with 236 roads losing their load-bearing capacity, signaling a broader issue that could require immediate attention from local and national authorities to improve infrastructure resilience against seasonal weather challenges.
