A resident in Praia Grande, São Paulo spotted a water snake and safely removed it from the beach to prevent it from being harmed.

A resident of Praia Grande, São Paulo, Laerte Primo Chapani, encountered a water snake (Helicops carinicaudus) on the sand while walking along the beach. Concerned for the animal's safety, he carefully removed it from the beach where it could have been harmed. The encounter occurred at Vila Mirim beach, shortly after heavy rain that may have caused the snake to venture close to the shore.

Laerte, who is 63 years old, recognized the snake as a non-venomous species, which alleviated his fear. Instead of fleeing, his primary concern was to ensure that the snake remained unharmed. He utilized a piece of wood to transport the approximately 50-centimeter snake to a safer area near a canal, expressing his dedication to protecting wildlife in his community.

This incident highlights the importance of community awareness and involvement in wildlife protection. Laerte's respectful attitude toward the snake exemplifies a positive interaction between humans and local fauna. His daily walks on the beach have led to multiple encounters with this species, underscoring the significance of open dialogue about cohabiting with wildlife in urban beach settings.
