VIDEO: Green snake caught preying on bat in a farm in the interior of SP
A green snake was filmed preying on a bat in a rural area of Tejupá, São Paulo, highlighting the local wildlife dynamics.
In a striking incident in Tejupá, São Paulo, a green snake (Philodryas olfersii) was caught on video while hunting a bat from the Vespertilionidae family inside the rafters of a house. The event occurred on February 16 and drew the attention of local residents, particularly due to the dramatic nature of the predator-prey interaction. The footage was captured by biologist and birdwatcher Ligia Carvalho, who had noted the presence of the snake in the days leading up to the filming, indicating its frequenting of the area.
Ligia explained that the snake likely had been lurking around prior to being observed, as it had ventured into the rafters of an adjacent house. The location is a collection of rural properties where neighbors maintain friendly relations, and the sighting caused a stir among residents concerned about the snake’s presence. Following the sighting, neighbors sought to remove the snake with the help of the caretaker, which provided an opportunity to document the entire event.
The incident underscores the fascinating and sometimes surprising interactions within local ecosystems, as well as the need for awareness regarding wildlife in rural areas. Such occurrences remind locals of the biodiversity that exists in their surroundings and the important roles that different species play in the ecosystem, even in residential settings.
