2027: Plateau tertiary institutions’ staff pledge support for Tinubu, Mutfwang’s re-election
Staff from Plateau State's tertiary institutions have formed a platform to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang in 2027.
Staff members from various tertiary institutions in Plateau State have come together to form the "Plateau Academics for Tinubu-Mutfwang 2027" platform, aimed at supporting the re-election campaigns of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang. This initiative was officially inaugurated in Jos and involves participation from over 20 federal, state, and private universities, signaling a significant consolidation of academic voices in the state's political landscape.
The State Coordinator of this platform, Associate Professor Augustine Azi, emphasized the pivotal role that academic institutions and their staff play in shaping political and developmental discourse. He noted that the academic community holds considerable influence, with its insights and contributions capable of impacting policy discussions and community inspiration. This move aligns with a broader goal to ensure that educators and academics engage more actively in determining the future political landscape of Plateau State and Nigeria.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the formation of this platform underscores a potential shift in how academic institutions view their role in politics. By mobilizing academic staff to support specific candidates, there is an implication that tertiary institutions may seek to leverage their societal influence to foster political candidates who align with their vision for governance. This development also raises questions about the involvement of educational institutions in partisan politics and how this could affect their perceived neutrality and academic freedom in the long run.
