Academics from Espol design a $400,000 vessel for transportation in the Galapagos Islands
A group of academics from the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral has designed a $400,000 vessel to improve inter-island transportation in the Galapagos Islands.
A team of academics from the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (Espol) has unveiled a proposal for a new type of vessel specifically engineered for inter-island transport in the Galapagos Islands. This project features a prototype of a fast boat designed to withstand the challenging maritime conditions of the region and elevate safety and operational standards for inter-island travel. Its development commenced in 2024 under the guidance of Alejandro Chanabá Ruiz, the dean of the Faculty of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences, alongside faculty member José María Rodríguez and other scholars.
The transportation of individuals and goods between the Galapagos Islands has faced numerous challenges, particularly due to incidents involving existing vessels. Many of these boats have been vulnerable to adverse conditions and accidents, prompting the need for a more reliable solution. The new vessel aims to provide a technical alternative to address these pressing issues by enhancing safety features and optimizing operational aspects of inter-island ferry services. The proposal has already been presented to the Galapagos Government Council during previous administrations.
This initiative not only highlights the innovative spirit within Ecuador's academic institutions but also reflects a broader commitment to improving the sustainable and safe transport ecosystem in the Galapagos Islands, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The successful implementation of this project could serve as a crucial step in protecting the fragile environment of the archipelago while ensuring that the needs of its residents and tourist inflows are met responsibly.
