Galápagos will receive $117 million for climate change program
Ecuador's Galápagos Islands are set to receive a $117.6 million investment for a climate change program in collaboration with international organizations.
The Galápagos Islands are set to embark on a significant climate change program supported by a $117.6 million investment, as announced by Ecuador's Ministry of Environment and Energy. This initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience and promote low-emission lifestyles in the archipelago, integrating efforts from the Ecuadorian government alongside international organizations such as the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The funding will come from the Green Climate Fund and will involve strategic cooperation to protect the unique ecosystems of the Galápagos Islands while positioning Ecuador as a leader in climate action. The agreement to launch the program was signed by Inés Manzano, the head of MAE, and Gherda Barreto, the FAO representative in Ecuador, highlighting government's commitment to combat climate change in these ecologically fragile regions.
Inés Manzano referred to the program as the "new evolutionary challenge for Galápagos," signaling a progressive step towards sustainability. These resources are intended to enhance climate resilience and develop sustainable livelihoods that minimize emissions, aligning with global efforts to address climate change comprehensively.
