Balanced feed industry guarantees the purchase of all national corn but will need 500,000 additional tons

Ecuador's balanced feed industry will purchase all national corn production but still requires an additional 500,000 tons to meet annual demand.

The balanced feed industry in Ecuador has confirmed that it will fully absorb the national corn production, as stated by the Association of Producers of Balanced Foods (Aprobal). However, they have also highlighted a significant shortfall in corn supply with an annual demand of about 1.35 million tons, necessitating imports to fill the gap. The formal balanced feed industry accounts for about 1 million tons of corn, which is tracked by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).

In the context of protein production, which includes chicken, eggs, pork, and cattle, the demand for corn remains critical. The informal producers are estimated to consume an additional 350,000 tons, bringing the total domestic corn consumption for animal protein production to 1.35 million tons. This shortfall of 500,000 tons creates a pressing need for imports, indicating a potential vulnerability in the national food supply chain.

Moreover, the report indicates that around 150,000 tons of corn will be allocated for human consumption, reflecting the dual use of this vital crop in Ecuador. The situation underlines the importance of strategic planning in agricultural production and highlights the need for policies that can address the challenges of food security and import dependency in the sector.
