Children on Bicycles. Record-Breaking Cycling May is Coming Closer

The 'Cycling May' initiative in Łódź encourages children to cycle to school during May, with extended registration for schools until March 13.

The 'Cycling May' campaign is gaining popularity in Łódź due to its simple rules that combine daily physical activity with elements of fun and competition among classes and schools. This year marks the third iteration of the initiative, which aims to get kindergarteners and elementary school students to ride their bicycles, scooters, or skateboards to their educational institutions throughout the month of May. The city of Łódź has responded to local schools and kindergartens by extending the registration period until March 13, accommodating the increasing interest in the program.

Last year, over 9,000 participants from 85 local preschools and elementary schools took part in the campaign, collectively achieving an impressive 199,226 active trips to their schools. The initiative not only engages students, but also encourages involvement from parents and teachers, thereby fostering a community spirit and promoting healthier lifestyles. As spring approaches, the campaign aims to inspire more children to embrace cycling as a fun and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Additionally, discussions around expanding cycling infrastructure in the city are underway, indicating a broader shift towards promoting sustainable transport options. Such initiatives are crucial in enhancing urban mobility and ensuring that young cyclists have safe routes to pursue their activities. With the involvement of the local government and community, 'Cycling May' may set the stage for a more bike-friendly environment in Łódź, encouraging long-term habits that benefit both health and the environment.
