Is the Polish school teaching effectively? Three key studies on students start in spring
Three important educational research projects will begin in selected primary schools across Poland in March and April to assess student reading, math skills, and challenges of modern citizenship.
In March and April, selected primary schools across Poland will launch three significant research projects aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the education system. These projects include the main PIRLS 2026 study and pilot studies for TIMSS 2027 and ICCS 2027. They are designed to analyze the reading and math proficiency of students, along with their ability to navigate contemporary citizenship challenges. The results of these international comparisons will be available by the end of 2027.
The PIRLS 2026 study will be the largest of the initiatives, involving approximately 150 randomly selected primary schools. The focus will primarily be on fourth-grade students, who will engage with tailored educational materials. Additionally, school directors, Polish language teachers, and parents will also participate through surveys, providing a comprehensive overview of the students' educational environment and outcomes.
Polish students consistently rank among the world's top readers, yet there are indications that improvements can be made. The upcoming studies will contribute crucial data and insights that may influence future educational policies and practices in Poland, potentially addressing any gaps in student learning and citizenship education. The implications of these studies extend not just to the educational landscape in Poland but also to its standing in international educational comparisons.
