Virves is the leader of his class, Solberg and Ogier battle for the overall victory
Estonian rally driver Robert Virves leads the WRC2 standings after a strong performance in Kenya, while Oliver Solberg holds a narrow lead in the overall competition against Sébastien Ogier.
In the third stage of the World Rally Championship (WRC) season held in Kenya, Estonian rally driver Robert Virves secured the top position in the WRC2 category after an impressive performance on Friday. Starting the day in third, Virves and his co-driver Jakko Viilo climbed to second by the sixth stage and eventually took the lead by the seventh, maintaining it despite facing a sudden drop in speed caused by livestock on the road during the eighth stage. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Virves as he competes against a diverse field in challenging conditions.
In the overall standings, Virves is currently in ninth place, trailing British driver Gus Greensmith by 14.5 seconds and Fabrizio Zaldivar from Paraguay by 28.2 seconds. While fellow Estonian drivers Romet Jürgenson and Siim Oja began the day after a previous interruption, they were unfortunately unable to complete the first stage due to engine problems. Their struggle highlights the unpredictable nature of rally racing, where mechanical failures can easily undermine competitors’ efforts.
At the end of the day, the overall lead was held by Swedish driver Oliver Solberg, who is only one second ahead of his teammate Sébastien Ogier. This narrow gap sets the stage for an exciting competition ahead, as both drivers are determined to outpace each other. The events of this rally not only reflect the skill and resilience of the participating drivers but also contribute to the growing reputation of Estonian rally driving in the international arena.
