Chinese Nobel of Literature, Mo Yan comes to Brazil for the 50th Anniversary Forum of Unesp
Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan will arrive in Brazil for an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the São Paulo State University (Unesp) alongside a delegation of writers from his country.
Mo Yan, the Chinese Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, is set to visit Brazil in May to participate in an event marking the 50th anniversary of the São Paulo State University (Unesp). This commemorative event will take place at the Memorial da América Latina in São Paulo from May 13 to 15. Alongside Mo Yan, a delegation of younger Chinese writers, including Yang Zhihan and Suonan Cairang, will be attending the forum, highlighting a cultural exchange between countries and generations of writers.
Despite his international acclaim, Mo Yan remains relatively less known in Brazil compared to other Nobel winners. His notable works, such as "The Frogs," were published in Brazil some years after he received the Nobel Prize. However, his other book "Change" is currently without a publisher in the country. This situation suggests a gap in the representation of Chinese literature in the Brazilian market, raising questions about the potential for broader recognition of such works moving forward.
The visit of Mo Yan and the younger writers is expected to foster discussions about literature, culture, and the challenges and opportunities faced by contemporary writers. As the event aligns with Brazil's increasing interest in global literature, it may serve as a platform for deeper engagement with Chinese literary contributions, enriching the cultural landscape of both nations.
