Centenary of Foucault will launch unpublished works in Brazil
In the centennial year of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, Brasil's Editora Unesp will launch previously unpublished texts in Brazil.
This year marks the centenary of the influential French philosopher Michel Foucault, known for seminal works such as 'History of Sexuality' and 'Madness and Civilization.' In honor of this occasion, Editora Unesp is set to release several texts by Foucault that have never been published in Brazil before. These works, some of which have been gathered by the prestigious French publisher Seuil, highlight lesser-known aspects of Foucault's extensive contributions to philosophy and social theory.
Among the first of these unpublished works is 'Archaeology of Human Sciences,' which is based on a course Foucault taught at the University of São Paulo in 1965 during his first visit to Brazil. This course served as a historical and philosophical backdrop and also introduced Foucault's significant work, 'The Order of Things,' released in France in 1966. The launch of these texts provides Brazilian readers with direct access to Foucault's thoughts and teachings, potentially reigniting interest and scholarship regarding his philosophy in the nation.
Foucault's time in Tunisia, where he lectured at the University of Tunis until 1968, also contributed notably to his philosophical development. His course titled 'The Place of Man in Modern Thought – Tunis Course' further underscored his exploration of human experience and knowledge production, offering a nuanced look at how context shapes philosophical discourse. This release not only celebrates Foucault's centenary but also enriches the contemporary understanding of his work within Brazil.
