'Party drug': Civil Police arrest two in operation against illegal sale of ketamine in Santarém
The Civil Police of Santarém arrested two individuals during an operation targeting the illegal sale of ketamine, known colloquially as the 'party drug'.
The Civil Police in Santarém, located in the western part of Pará, Brazil, launched an operation on Friday morning to combat drug trafficking, specifically focusing on the illegal sale of ketamine, which is commonly referred to as the 'party drug.' This operation led to the arrest of two individuals: one was apprehended under a warrant, and the other was caught in the act of selling the drug. The operation involved the execution of 16 search and seizure warrants and mobilized more than 55 law enforcement agents.
During the operation, various quantities of drugs were seized at targeted locations. According to Delegate Erik Petterson, who spoke to TV Tapajós, this operation was also supported by officials from the Adepará. Petterson noted that ketamine is primarily used for veterinary purposes, such as surgeries for horses, dogs, and cats; however, its recreational use has been rising. This surge in recreational use has raised concerns within the community about the potential dangers associated with the drug.
The operation not only highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region but also underscores the challenges posed by substances that were traditionally meant for medical or veterinary uses. The law enforcement efforts reflect a growing recognition of the need to address not just the trafficking of these substances, but also the societal impacts and health risks they pose when used recreationally. By targeting the illegal sale of ketamine, authorities aim to mitigate the associated risks and promote public safety in Santarém and surrounding areas.
