Airport police arrest man with over 2,000 live ants

A man was arrested at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for attempting to smuggle over 2,000 live ants in his luggage.

Authorities in Kenya arrested a 27-year-old Chinese national named Zhang Kequn at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi after discovering he was trying to smuggle 2,238 live garden ants in his luggage during a security check. The ants were primarily contained in test tubes, while others were wrapped in tissue paper. This incident has raised concerns regarding wildlife trafficking and the illegal transport of living organisms across borders, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations.

Prosecutor Allen Mulama discussed the case in court and revealed that immigration officials had previously issued a stop order on Zhang's passport because he had evaded arrest in the country the year before. This history of evasion points to a more extensive pattern of legal issues surrounding Zhang, further complicating his current legal situation and the implications of his actions. The involvement of the Kenya Wildlife Service indicates that the matter has significant wildlife conservation implications, as smuggling live animals crosses several legal and ethical boundaries.

Zhang has identified three individuals purported to be his suppliers of the ants, although he has not publicly confirmed these claims. The ongoing investigation includes the analysis of electronic devices seized from him, reflecting authorities' intentions to delve deeper into the network behind this incident. This case also highlights a broader issue of illegal wildlife trade, bringing attention to the need for increased border control measures and public awareness of wildlife conservation efforts in Kenya and globally.
