Kenya: Chinese National Held at Nairobi Airport Over Ant Smuggling

A Chinese national was arrested at Nairobi's airport for attempting to smuggle over 2,000 protected queen garden ants.

Zhang Kequn, a Chinese national, was apprehended at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while trying to export more than 2,000 queen garden ants, species Messor cephalotes, which are protected under international biodiversity treaties. Prosecutors disclosed that the ants were packaged in specialized test tubes and tissue paper rolls, following an earlier crackdown on an anti-trafficking network presumed to be led by Zhang. He reportedly evaded authorities last year by leaving Kenya with a different passport.

The Kenya Wildlife Service highlighted the increasing smuggling of these ants, which are popular in the exotic pet market across Europe and Asia, prompting concerns about biodiversity and illegal wildlife trade. Zhang’s previous connection to an anti-trafficking ring raises alarm over the organized nature of such smuggling operations, suggesting a potential network that extends beyond Kenya's borders and into larger international frameworks.

As investigations proceed, Zhang has been remanded in custody for five days, allowing authorities to delve deeper into the circumstances of this case and to further understand the implications of wildlife smuggling on global biodiversity. If found guilty, this case may set a precedent in Kenya for dealing with wildlife trafficking offenses.
