Reps warn NPA, Customs, others against shunning invitations
The Nigerian House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee has threatened to compel government agencies to appear before it amid concerns of non-compliance with invitations.
The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee in Nigeria is currently investigating the performance and benefits returned to the Federal Government from ports operated by concessionaires. In a stern warning, the committee has expressed its intention to invoke constitutional powers to ensure that key government officials from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Customs Service, and Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission comply with invitations to testify before them. The committee has highlighted that this is a final opportunity for these executives to provide necessary documents and respond to inquiries, underlining the significance of their roles in the investigation.
The committee's chairman, Mr. Kolawale Akinlayo, addressed media representatives in Abuja, showcasing frustration over the laxity exhibited by certain Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) regarding the summons. His remarks underscore the critical nature of cooperation from these entities, as parts of their testimony are essential for the committee's operations. Without necessary documentation or attendance from these agencies, the committee's ability to conduct a thorough and effective investigation may be severely hampered, potentially impacting the overall accountability of government operations involving concessionaire-operated ports.
This situation reflects broader issues of governance and accountability within the Nigerian federal system, particularly concerning the engagement and responsiveness of public sector entities. Failure by the nominated agencies to comply with the committee's requests could signal deeper systemic challenges within Nigeria's governmental structures. The situation poses potential implications not only for the outcome of the investigation but also for public trust in government institutions and their transparency in handling issues related to port operations and revenue management.
