Probe: Reps give two-day ultimatum to REA MD, NEP boss

The Nigerian House of Representatives has set a two-day deadline for the heads of the Rural Electrification Agency and Nigeria Electrification Programme to attend an investigative hearing regarding funding in the renewable energy sector.

The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy in Nigeria has issued a two-day ultimatum for the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, and the Head of the Nigeria Electrification Programme, Olufemi Akinyelure, to appear before it as part of an ongoing investigation into the country's renewable energy sector. This inquiry focuses on grants, loans, and investments spanning from 2015 to 2024, aiming to ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of funds and the implementation of projects. During the resumed hearing in Abuja, committee chair Afam Ogene expressed frustration over the continuous non-compliance by the officials with previous invitations, which he described as a disregard for legislative authority. Ogene represents the Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra and has a responsibility to ensure that these critical issues are addressed, particularly given the significance of renewable energy in Nigeria's development agenda. He emphasized that a failure to attend this meeting by the deadline of March 5, 2026, would lead to the committee exercising its constitutional powers, indicating serious consequences for the officials involved. This situation highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria's efforts to boost its renewable energy capabilities, essential for sustainable development and addressing energy poverty in the country.
