Justice accepts agreement with São Paulo player after xenophobic offense in Libertadores

São Paulo Justice has accepted an agreement with player Damián Bobadilla following his xenophobic comment during a Libertadores match.

The São Paulo Justice has accepted an agreement between the Public Ministry and Paraguayan player Damián Bobadilla of São Paulo FC after he was accused of making a xenophobic remark by calling an opponent a 'starving Venezuelan' during a Libertadores match at Morumbi Stadium last year. This agreement, reached on Wednesday, October 11, mandates that Bobadilla undertake educational measures aimed at addressing his behavior.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bobadilla will be required to participate in educational sessions focusing on xenophobia and produce four two-minute videos reflecting his understanding of what he learned. He is also obligated to visit the Immigration Museum as part of his educational journey. Additionally, the agreement stipulates that he must make four posts about xenophobia on his social media accounts, one every 30 days, with the content subject to approval by the Public Ministry.

Furthermore, Bobadilla is to donate R$ 61,000 worth of books to the Coordination of Policies for Immigrants and the Promotion of Decent Work. Successful completion of these obligations will allow for the case to be closed without criminal prosecution. Bobadilla has been playing for São Paulo since 2020, and this incident has raised important discussions regarding racism and xenophobia in sports.
