Abel Braga suspended by STJD for homophobic statement
International's technical director, Abel Braga, has been suspended by STJD following a homophobic statement made during his introduction as the team's coach.
Abel Braga, the technical director of the Brazilian football club Internacional, has been sanctioned by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) for making a homophobic remark at a press conference when he was announced as coach for the final matches of the Campeonato Brasileiro last year. The STJD judged Braga under article 243-G of the Brazilian Code of Sporting Justice, which addresses discriminatory acts related to ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, among other factors.
The disciplinary commission determined that Braga's actions fell under this provision, which carries a minimum suspension of five games. In this case, Braga received the minimum suspension of five matches along with a fine of R$ 20,000. His suspension will take effect 24 hours after the announcement, which means he could still be present in the locker room when Internacional plays Palmeiras later that same evening, although the full carryout of his punishment will hinder his appearances in subsequent games.
This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny of statements and behavior in the world of sports, particularly in Brazil, where discussions about homophobia and discrimination have gained significant attention. Braga's case is a reminder of the responsibility that public figures have regarding their words and their potential impact, particularly in a context where sporting culture is being increasingly challenged to be more inclusive and respectful.
