The mayor of Elektrėnai, G. Ratkevičius, is taking action against the Kazokiškės landfill due to alarming levels of hydrogen sulfide detected in the air, which the Environmental Protection Department (AAD) has flagged as exceeding safe limits. Reports indicate that the concentration of this hazardous gas was five times higher than permissible levels, and on March 11, it peaked at nearly ten times the allowable threshold. The mayor expressed frustration over the daily recurrence of this pollution problem, which has persisted since the previous Friday.

Currently, the municipal authorities are contemplating declaring an emergency situation to address the issue more effectively. However, Ratkevičius noted that a formal decision has yet to be made, largely due to insufficient evidence linking the pollution to specific health complaints from residents. He emphasized the importance of receiving medical reports from the community that indicate health deterioration due to the landfill's operations, which could demonstrate a causal relationship with reported symptoms such as nausea, eye irritation, and coughing stemming from the gas emissions.

The situation highlights growing concerns over environmental health and the impact of industrial waste management practices in Lithuania. The ongoing monitoring and enforcement actions by the AAD are crucial as the local government seeks to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
