Ministry of Environment files complaint over environmental waste management in Guayaquil
Ecuador's Ministry of Environment has filed a complaint to the Prosecutor's Office following assessments that revealed high concentrations of lead in industrial sludge transferred to a local landfill.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy in Ecuador has filed a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office regarding serious environmental violations in Guayaquil. This action comes after environmental controls identified elevated levels of lead in industrial sludge that was disposed of at the Las Iguanas landfill, which is managed by the municipal authorities. The assessments, which were conducted on the wastewater treatment system of the company Oletnat S.A., revealed alarmingly high concentrations of 747.64 milligrams of lead per kilogram of sludge, far exceeding the permissible limit of 5 milligrams per kilogram as stipulated by current environmental regulations.
The inspections were carried out using samples processed by Labcestta, an accredited laboratory recognized by the Ecuadorian Accreditation Service. The technical report LDMA-002-2026 confirmed the presence of hazardous materials, raising urgent concerns about public health and environmental safety. The sludge, which is a byproduct of wastewater treatment, was transported by the company Urvaseo and poses a significant threat to the surrounding environment, necessitating immediate governmental response.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ecuadorian authorities in managing industrial waste properly amidst escalating environmental degradation. The Ministry's action signals a commitment to enforcing environmental laws more rigorously, but it also points to the critical need for better regulatory oversight and management practices to prevent such dangerous levels of contamination in the future. The outcome of the complaint and any subsequent investigations will be closely monitored, reflecting the broader implications for environmental governance in the region.
