Modernization of the DNA Laboratory: Accelerating the Identification of Missing Persons from the Homeland War

The Croatian Minister of Veterans, Tomo Medved, has expressed full government support for continued investments in the upgrading and equipping of a DNA laboratory in Zagreb. He emphasized that the search for missing persons and the identification of remains from the Homeland War remains a top priority for the Ministry of Veterans. The initiative aims to improve forensic capabilities and bring closure to the families of missing individuals.
During a meeting at the Ministry of Veterans, Minister Medved received the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Zagreb, Professor Slavko OreΕ‘koviΔ, and Professor Milovan Kubat from the DNA laboratory of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Criminalistics. Also attending the meeting was Dr. Ana Filko, Director of the Office for Detained and Missing Persons, alongside her team. Discussions focused on further investments to enhance the capabilities of the DNA laboratory, which are essential for effectively identifying and processing remains from those lost during the war.
This endeavor follows previous investments made in the years 2020 and 2021, aimed at acquiring capital equipment and expanding facility space. The Croatian government is committed to utilizing cutting-edge technology to significantly improve the processes of identifying remains, thereby assisting in the long-term effort to locate and identify individuals who went missing during the conflict, addressing an ongoing humanitarian issue in Croatia.
