Former Milanović Chief Tomislav Saucha Released from Prison
Tomislav Saucha, former chief of the office of ex-Prime Minister Zoran Milanović, has been conditionally released from prison after serving part of his sentence for fraud.
Tomislav Saucha, who served as the chief of staff for former Prime Minister Zoran Milanović, was released from Kaznionica in Turopolju after being granted parole. He had been sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in the 'Dnevnice' affair, which involved the fraud of state funds through falsified travel orders. Alongside him, his former secretary Sandra Zeljko received a 4.5-year sentence for her role in the scheme.
The court ruling that led to Saucha's imprisonment was upheld by the Supreme Court in March 2023, which confirmed the initial verdict of three years for stealing almost one million kuna from the state budget. In addition to their prison sentences, both Saucha and Zeljko have been barred from holding any public office and are also required to repay the funds they embezzled, demonstrating the serious ramifications of their actions.
Since beginning his sentence in October 2023, Saucha had chosen not to appeal the ruling that required him to serve his time in Zagreb prison. His release marks a significant moment in Croatian politics, as he had ties to prominent political figures, raising questions about corruption and accountability in government roles, a theme that continues to resonate in the public discourse.
