Grandmother and grandson die after being thrown from 'cinquentinha' and run over on BR-232 in Belo Jardim

A tragic traffic accident in Belo Jardim, Brazil, resulted in the deaths of a grandmother and her grandson after they were struck by vehicles while riding a ciclomotor.

On the night of Thursday, October 12, a severe traffic accident in Belo Jardim, Pernambuco, claimed the lives of two individuals: a grandmother aged 87 and her 17-year-old grandson. The incident occurred when the pair were riding a 'cinquentinha', a small two-wheeled vehicle, along the BR-232 highway. As they traveled near kilometer 182, a pickup truck hit them, causing them to be thrown off the scooter, resulting in both being subsequently run over by another vehicle.

Witnesses and investigators from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported that after the accident, both drivers remained at the scene and tested negative for alcohol consumption, indicating that intoxication was not a factor in the crash. Despite the drivers being unharmed, the impact of the collision was severe, leading to the immediate deaths of the victims at the scene. Emergency teams from the Instituto de Criminalística and IML (Institute of Legal Medicine) were dispatched to handle the aftermath.

This tragic event raises concerns over road safety for vulnerable users, particularly in regions where small vehicles like 'cinquentinhas' are common. The incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved awareness about sharing the road with less protected vehicle riders, especially the elderly and young riders who are most at risk in such accidents.
