US makes a mistake by softening sanctions on Russian oil, says Mercs

German Chancellor Friedrich Mercs criticized the US decision to ease sanctions on Russian oil, asserting that it could inadvertently aid Russia in funding its military actions in Ukraine.

During a visit to Norway, German Chancellor Friedrich Mercs expressed his dissatisfaction with the United States' recent decision to soften certain sanctions imposed on Russia. He described this move as erroneous, emphasizing that it could serve to alleviate the energy crisis spurred by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, ultimately allowing Russia to bolster its financial support for the war in Ukraine. Mercs firmly asserted that the sanctions should not be relaxed under any circumstances, indicating a strong stance against the actions of the US government in this context.

Furthermore, Germany's Minister of Economics and Energy, Katja Kipping, also voiced her concerns regarding the continued financial support that the US sanctions could provide to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kipping warned that by easing sanctions, the US could inadvertently provide Russia with the means to sustain its military operations, which would directly threaten global stability. This sentiment echoes a broader concern among G7 leaders, as highlighted in a recent video conference where discussions centered on Russia's oil and gas supplies were held.

Mercs noted that six G7 countries conveyed their opposition to the US's approach, stressing that such a decision would send the wrong message to Russia. His remarks underline a growing divergence within the international community regarding how best to confront the challenges posed by Russia's actions in Ukraine and its implications for global energy security. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the potential softening of sanctions raises questions about the coherence of Western strategies towards Russia and the long-term consequences for Ukraine's defense efforts.
