Germany: Easing US oil sanctions may replenish the Kremlin's war chest
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concern that easing US oil sanctions would ultimately benefit Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking during a visit to Norway, warned that any easing of US sanctions on oil could be a mistake, regardless of the reasons behind such measures. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that Russia does not leverage the war in Iran to weaken Ukraine further. This statement reflects a growing apprehension within German leadership regarding the potential economic implications for Russia in light of international sanctions.
Additionally, Minister of Economy Katharina Reiche conveyed her worry that easing sanctions might inadvertently boost Russian President Vladimir Putin's funding for the war. Their comments follow a discussion among G7 leaders, including US President Donald Trump, focusing on the issue of Russian oil and gas supply. The G7 leaders' consensus indicated a strong disapproval of any action perceived as signaling a relaxation in pressure on Russia during this critical time.
Merz reiterated that six G7 members clearly communicated that easing sanctions would send the wrong message to Russia and the international community. Furthermore, he noted the contrasting approach taken by the US government, suggesting that such decisions could undermine collective efforts to curtail Russian aggression and support Ukraine, revealing strains in international unity regarding the sanctions policy against Russia.
