Five high school boys were arrested under robbery charges for assaulting a 17-year-old boy trying to sell prohibited nicotine vaping products in Osaka.

Five 16-year-old boys were arrested by Osaka Prefectural Police on charges of robbery leading to injury after they allegedly assaulted a 17-year-old boy with a metal bat and stole electronic cigarettes and cash from him. The police stated that the boys admitted to the charges. According to authorities, the assaulted boy was attempting to sell a type of prohibited nicotine vaping product known as 'Nicopuff' to the assailants, with the assault occurring at approximately 2:05 AM on the streets of Yodogawa-ku, Osaka.

The police reported that the assault was premeditated, involving the assailants conspiring to attack the victim, who was left with bruises on his back as a consequence. The connection between the victim and the assailants was established through social media, where they had previously interacted before setting up a meeting for the transaction. The value of the stolen items, which included a bag containing Nicopuffs worth approximately 48,300 yen and 800 yen in cash, significantly highlights the burgeoning issue surrounding illicit nicotine products among youth in Japan.

This incident comes amidst growing scrutiny and law enforcement actions surrounding 'Nicopuff', as authorities have previously arrested individuals for selling these unapproved products. Investigations into the acquisition methods of these illegal vaping products are expected to continue, with police focusing on the broader ecosystem of young people engaging in sales and possession of prohibited items, hinting at a concerning trend among Japan's youth regarding vape-related issues.
