Tourist suffers fractures after falling in a cliff area during a hang gliding flight in a tourist destination in Bahia
A tourist from Rio de Janeiro suffered multiple fractures after falling while hang gliding in Arraial D'Ajuda, Bahia.
A 38-year-old tourist from Rio de Janeiro was seriously injured after a hang gliding accident in Arraial D'Ajuda, a district of Porto Seguro in southern Bahia. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, September 12, when the tourist, who had 15 years of experience in hang gliding and was qualified for the sport, fell in an area of cliffs that is known to be difficult to access. Emergency services were called to the scene to assist the injured man, who may face a lengthy recovery process due to the nature of his injuries.
The crash took place while the man was using the ramp at Praia da Pitinga, which is popular for both hang gliding and paragliding. While both are aerial sports, they differ in execution and speed; hang gliders are typically laid flat and can achieve higher speeds, providing a different adrenaline experience compared to paragliding, where the pilot is seated and flies at a slower pace. This distinction may have contributed to the severity of the fall.
According to Ivan Bla, president of the Pargliding Association of Porto Seguro, the Praia da Pitinga ramp has been a well-established site for over three decades, indicating its popularity among adventure enthusiasts. This incident raises concerns about the safety protocols in place for hang gliding, especially in locations with challenging landing conditions. It also highlights the risks associated with extreme sports in tourist areas, prompting discussions on the need for better safety measures for participants.
