Friberg began his journalism career working for various Finnish newspapers, including Västrä Nyland, Östra Nyland, and Vasabladet. He served as the news chief at Yleisradio, Finland's national public broadcasting company, from 1965 to 1970. His editorial leadership at Iltalehti from 1984 to 1987 cemented his influence in Finnish media. Additionally, he was a Member of Parliament for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for nine years, from 1970 to 1979, showcasing his political involvement.

His diplomatic career included serving as an ambassador in Athens, Greece, from 1992 to 1995, and in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 1995 to 2001. Friberg's passing marks the loss of an important figure in Finnish journalism and politics, leaving behind a legacy that influenced many within the industry and his community.
