Seven in 10 Americans say Trump’s tariffs caused higher prices
A new poll reveals that 70% of Americans believe Trump's tariffs have led to higher prices, posing challenges for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
According to a recent Harris Poll conducted for the Guardian, 70% of Americans attribute higher prices to tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. This perception presents significant challenges for Republicans in the forthcoming midterm elections, as a clear majority of voters now view Trump's tariffs negatively. In fact, 72% of all voters surveyed stated that they believed these tariffs have detrimentally affected the economy, and 67% indicated that they are not an effective strategy for economic improvement.
The survey further highlights bipartisan dissatisfaction with Trump's economic policy, revealing that even among Republicans, there is acknowledgment of the tariffs' adverse effects. 64% of Republicans concurred that Trump's tariffs have increased prices, while 60% of them assessed the impact on consumers as more negative than positive. This sentiment echoes across party lines; 77% of Democrats and 67% of independents also hold similar views, indicating a widespread concern about the implementation of tariffs and their economic implications.
Despite the poll results, Trump persists in advocating for the introduction of additional tariffs, even after a ruling from the Supreme Court limited some of the tariffs that were established last year. This determination could further entrench the divide between voter sentiment and Republican strategies in the upcoming elections, raising questions about the effectiveness of such economic policies and their potential impact on consumer behavior and overall economic health in the United States.
