Many residents do not know that they can receive a fine for not using a seatbelt on a bus

A recent survey reveals that over half of Latvians are unaware that not wearing a seatbelt on long-distance buses can lead to a monetary fine.

A recent study conducted by FlixBus and Norstat Latvia has found that 54% of the Latvian population is either unaware or only partially informed about the fines associated with not wearing a seatbelt in long-distance buses. According to Latvian traffic laws, passengers can face a fine of up to 15 euros for failing to buckle up. Nonetheless, this knowledge has not significantly improved compliance, as one in three passengers still chooses to forego seatbelt use while traveling by bus.

The survey also highlights a concerning lack of awareness among different regions in Latvia, particularly in Rīga and Pierīga, where only 43% of respondents were aware of the potential fine for not wearing a seatbelt. In contrast, residents of the Kurzeme region displayed a better understanding of the law. However, the overall attitude towards seatbelt use on buses remains lax, suggesting that both the enforcement of safety regulations and public education need to be prioritized to enhance passenger safety on long-distance travels.

Despite the potential fines, the survey shows that many travelers still do not prioritize their safety, indicating a cultural challenge in changing behaviors. Continued efforts are required to inform passengers of the risks associated with not using seatbelts and to instill a greater sense of responsibility towards personal safety during travel.
