"Surprises are needed to have something to wonder about!" Works of French masters of Art Deco are on display in Latvia

A new exhibition in Latvia showcases original Art Deco works from France, highlighting the style's historical significance and its modern interpretations.

Latvia is currently hosting an exhibition featuring original Art Deco artworks and furniture from France, specifically pieces from the National Furniture Fund of France. The exhibition aims to not only celebrate the historical significance of the Art Deco movement, which thrived in Paris about a century ago, but also to connect its legacy to contemporary art and design. The exhibits include intricately woven wool and silk tapestries alongside furniture that exemplifies the decorative style cultivated by designers during the early 20th century.

Inse Baranovska, the director of the museum and curator of the exhibition, emphasized the importance of linking Art Deco to modern practices, speaking to the evolution and future of cultural heritage. The exhibition presents unique items that reflect current trends; it showcases how the National Furniture Fund is still active in designing innovative and thought-provoking pieces in the 21st century. This approach not only honors tradition but also encourages experimentation and creativity in the decorative arts.

Among the provocative displays is a chair from the early 1990s, previously belonging to France's Minister of Culture, Jack Lang. This unique piece is emblematic of how Art Deco continues to influence contemporary design and thought, bridging the gap between past and present. By integrating music into the museum’s atmosphere, the exhibition offers a multi-sensory experience, inviting visitors to engage with the artworks on a deeper level and appreciate the ongoing relevance of this iconic artistic movement.
