Sweden takes control of another vessel in the Baltic Sea

The Swedish Coast Guard has seized a vessel in the Baltic Sea, marking the second such incident within a week.

The Swedish Coast Guard announced on Thursday evening that it has taken control of a vessel in the Baltic Sea, which has garnered attention from international media, including Reuters. This particular vessel, named Sea Owl I, measures 228 meters in length and was sailing under the Comorian flag. However, the Coast Guard raised suspicions that the ship may have been operating under a false flag. Notably, the Sea Owl I is listed on sanctions lists by the EU and several other countries, emphasizing the international legal concerns surrounding this vessel.

Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns, stating that the vessel is suspected of being part of a shadow fleet connected to Russia. The interception occurred off the coast of Trelleborg, a city in southern Sweden. This incident highlights the ongoing vigilance of the Swedish authorities in monitoring maritime activities that may be connected to illegal operations or potential security threats in the region.

This seizure follows another incident just the previous day, where the Swedish Coast Guard apprehended a vessel named Caffa, which was sailing under the Guinean flag. Authorities have indicated that Caffa has been involved in a grain theft incident in Crimea, further complicating the geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly between Ukraine and Russia. The Coast Guard has raised questions about the true nationality of these vessels, raising flags about international maritime laws and adherence to sanctions.
