Sweden has seized a second suspected shadow fleet vessel
Sweden's Coast Guard has taken control of a second suspected shadow fleet vessel in a week, near the coastal area of Trelleborg.
On a Thursday evening, the Swedish Coast Guard seized a 228-meter tanker believed to be part of a Russian shadow fleet, marking the second such operation conducted within a week. This action took place near the Trelleborg coastline and was executed after the vessel had been under surveillance for some time. According to Coast Guard spokesperson Mattias Lindholm, the operation involved collaboration with other authorities and continued the ongoing efforts to address illegal activities at sea.
This operation follows a previous seizure of another suspected vessel from the same shadow fleet, highlighting increasing vigilance by Swedish authorities in maritime enforcement. The Coast Guard is working alongside police and a national task force to assess the situation. The captain of the first seized vessel is under suspicion of multiple crimes, including the theft of Ukrainian grain and lacking nationality documentation, indicating larger issues related to maritime crime and unauthorized fishing operations in the region.
While the Swedish Coast Guard has not confirmed whether there are ongoing suspicions against individuals from the recent seizure, they have initiated preliminary investigations. The actions taken underline Sweden's commitment to ensuring maritime security, particularly in response to activities linked with potential Russian provocations and the implications of international law at sea. These operations may have wider ramifications for maritime safety and international cooperation in dealing with transnational maritime crimes.
