VIDEO: One of the largest fresh milk producers in Latvia recalls its products

One of Latvia's largest milk producers, Zemturi, has recalled over five tons of fresh milk due to the detection of Q fever bacteria in its herd.

Zemturi, one of the leading fresh milk producers in Latvia, has decided to recall its products from store shelves, citing safety concerns after Q fever was detected in one of its cows. The company reported recalling more than five tons of fresh milk as a precautionary measure following the identification of the pathogen in laboratory tests. This move highlights the vigilance of food safety standards in Latvia, as such outbreaks can impact public health and consumer trust.

The commercial director of the farm, Lelde Višņevska, explained that the reason for the presence of this bacterium in Zemturi could be its widespread existence throughout Latvia. Recent investigations have revealed that about 17% of farms in Latvia have encountered this pathogen. The presence of the bacteria is particularly concerning for dairy producers, as it can lead to serious health issues if bacteria enter the milk supply chain.

The Veterinary Service of Latvia, led by director Kristīne Lamberga, indicated that the implications of this outbreak are significant for animal health and public safety. As they continue to monitor the situation, this incident raises awareness about the need for stringent biosecurity measures in the dairy industry, ensuring both the safety of livestock and the final products offered to consumers in stores across the country.
