Blockade against construction company in Stegra – after unpaid wages
A wage blockade has been enacted against a construction company in Stegra, Sweden, affecting about 50 employees due to unpaid wages.
A wage blockade has been initiated by Byggnads, the construction workers' union, affecting approximately 50 workers at a construction site in Stegra, Sweden. The blockade, which took effect on March 13, mandates that union members will not perform any work until the company pays the wages that have not been received. Emil Persson, a representative of the union, stressed that the blockade will remain in place until the owed wages reach workers' accounts.
The labor dispute stems from the recent layoffs and wage issues experienced at the Stegra site, particularly during the winter months when many workers were put on furlough due to decreased activity. Persson highlighted the necessity of adhering to clear regulations regarding wage payments, stating that workers are entitled to receive furlough wages when they are laid off. The total amount owed to workers currently stands at nearly 400,000 SEK, which the company has failed to pay despite having sufficient work available in the past years.
The situation at Stegra reflects broader issues surrounding labor rights and wage protections for construction workers across Sweden, especially for those from diverse backgrounds employed within the industry. As the union steps in to ensure that workers receive their rightful wages, the blockade serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of adhering to labor laws and the serious consequences faced by companies that neglect their payroll obligations.
