SOS for Eating Disorders: Cases on the Rise
There is a growing alarm over eating disorders in Lombardy, Italy, with over 20,961 cases reported in the early months of 2026, showing a continuous upward trend since 2019.
In Lombardy, Italy, there is increasing concern regarding the rise of eating disorders within the region, as recent statistics reveal a constant upward trajectory since 2019. Official data indicates that there have been over 14,900 cases of nutritional and eating disorders reported in health services from 2019 to 2023, and the numbers have surged to 20,961 in the first months of 2026. The breakdown of these figures shows that 7,136 cases, accounting for 47.9%, are diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, while bulimia nervosa comprises 18.2%, translating to 2,718 cases. The remaining cases—46.2% or 6,882 individuals—are classified as unspecified eating behavior disorders, marking a troubling trend in public health.
The onset of eating disorders typically occurs between the ages of 15 and 19; however, there is an alarming increase in early-onset cases. Currently, 76.8% of the reported cases involve females, with a striking 90% prevalence in cases of anorexia and bulimia. In contrast, males account for 23.2% of initial contacts, and there is a notable presence of males among unspecified eating behavior disorders. This gender disparity highlights the critical need for targeted interventions and support systems that address the unique challenges faced by both males and females concerning eating disorders in the region.
The significant increase in reported cases and the demographics surrounding these disorders underscore a pressing public health issue that requires immediate attention. Stakeholders and health officials in Lombardy are called upon to develop effective strategies and preventive measures to combat this growing trend in eating disorders, facilitating access to mental health resources and support for affected individuals, particularly the adolescents at highest risk.
